We Just Grew Up

We Just Grew Up

Let's not forget that between the time we saw the spine-chilling opening crawl of Episode IV and the time we sat down to watch it again for Episode I, twenty years had passed. Many of us saw Star Wars as children or teenagers. We were different at that stage of our lives and it was easy to catch hold of our imagination: an idealistic youth, a princess, a villain, an exotic setting, cutting edge special effects... Sold! How could we not be? But with 20 years of fond memories the nostalgia grew and expectations rose. Could Lucas recreate the 70's all over again? If we thought he could, is it little wonder we were disappointed?

Jarring Discontinuity

Jarring Discontinuity

As we watch the new trilogy, every so often Lucas jabs our sense of continuity in the side. Really, R2-D2 has jet-boosters?! Droid armies abound? Yoda is faster than a bat out of hell on crack? C3P-O gets a convenient memory wipe? Jedi can leap a 10-story building? Vader later forgets he has relatives on Tatooine? The entire galaxy takes a giant step back in technological advancement? All of it feels like dirt swept under a rug, undermining the beauty of the originals.

Too Many Jedi

Too Many Jedi

Apparently, in the olden days of yore, the lightsaber was more common than a broomstick. What ever happened to the privileged few? Jedi battles might be fun, but that's not the role Jedi served in the original trilogy. Jedi stood in sharp contrast to the mindless battles waged by unenlightened masses. The Jedi were a metaphor for self-control and understanding of the universe, which happened on a personal level. The mass Jedi spectacles of Episodes II and III betray this point. Show-boating just doesn't ring true to the Jedi philosophy.
